Astrology Chart Shapes & Patterns

Before you look at individual planets, look at the big picture. The physical distribution of planets around your birth chart wheel creates a "shape"—a Jones Pattern—that reveals the overall temperament and orientation of your personality.

The 7 Core Shapes

In the early 20th century, Marc Edmund Jones identified seven distinct patterns of distribution. These shapes act as a "meta-analysis" of the soul, showing whether you are focused, scattered, balanced, or driven by a specific lack.

1. The Splash & The Bundle

The Splash: Planets are scattered all around the wheel. This indicates a person with diverse interests and a multi-talented nature. You are versatile but may struggle to focus on one thing.

The Bundle: Planets are all clustered within a narrow space (usually 120°). This is a highly focused, specialized individual who masters one specific area of life to a recursive depth.

2. The Bucket & The Bowl

The Bowl: All planets occupy exactly one half of the chart (180°). This indicates a self-contained person who is often seeking to fill the "empty" half of their life through experience.

The Bucket: Similar to the Bowl, but with one planet (the "handle") standing alone in the opposite half. This handle planet acts as the driver for the entire personality, often showing a singular obsession or mission.

3. The See-Saw & The Splay

The See-Saw: Two distinct clusters of planets face each other. This is the mark of a "binary" thinker—someone who is constantly weighing opposites and seeking balance in their life.

The Splay: Planets are grouped into three or more distinct "clumps." This indicates a person with several strong, disparate talents that they must learn to integrate over time.

Geometry of the Soul

Seeing your chart shape helps you understand your most basic energetic "skeleton." It explains why some people are focused (Bundle) while others are jacks-of-all-trades (Splash). By honoring your shape, you can align your career and lifestyle with your natural energy flow.
