Astronomy vs Astrology: Science & Soul

While they sound similar and share a common history, astronomy and astrology are two very different ways of looking at the sky. One focuses on the physical laws of the universe, while the other seeks deep human meaning.

A shared origin

Until the 17th century, "astronomer" and "astrologer" were often the same job. Scholars like Galileo and Kepler used mathematical calculations (astronomy) to determine where the planets were, so they could then interpret what those movements meant for kings and nations (astrology).

The "Great Divide" happened during the Enlightenment, when the scientific method began to require physical proof, separating the mathematical study of space from the philosophical study of influence.

Astronomy: The How

Astronomy is a natural science. It asks: How far away is Jupiter? What is it made of? How does gravity affect its moons? It relies on telescopes, physics, and chemistry to map the "matter" of the universe.

Astrology: The Why

Astrology is a symbolic language. It doesn't claim that the physical gravity of Venus affects your love life, but rather that the cycle of Venus is a mirror reflecting a specific archetypal energy. It asks: What does this movement mean for me?

Can they coexist?

Many modern seekers find value in both. Astronomy humbles us with the vastness of the universe, while astrology gives us a sense of belonging within that vastness. You don't have to choose between science and soul.
