The 5 Major Astrology Aspects

While planets represent the "characters" and signs represent their "costumes," **aspects** are the script. They describe the geometric relationships between planets that tell us how they interact—whether they are collaborating in harmony or clashing in challenge.

What is an Aspect?

An aspect is simply the distance in degrees between two planets. Certain distances are considered mathematically significant. In classical astrology, we focus on the five "Ptolemaic" aspects. Understanding these connections is the key to moving from "pop" astrology to deep, psychological analysis.

1. The Conjunction (0°)

Two planets sitting together. This is a point of extreme intensity. Their energies blend so closely that it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. It is a focus of power, but can also lead to a lack of objectivity.

2. The Sextile (60°)

A harmonious aspect of opportunity. Sextiles are like a "friendly conversation." They don't force action, but they provide ease if you choose to use the energy. They often represent talents you can develop through moderate effort.

3. The Square (90°)

The aspect of friction and tension. Squares represent the "grit" that creates the pearl. While challenging, they provide the necessary push for growth and achievement. Planets in square are often working at cross-purposes, requiring you to find a middle ground.

4. The Trine (120°)

Pure harmony. Trines are gifts from the universe. Energy flows effortlessly between these planets, often representing natural talents that you take for granted. The only danger of a trine is laziness—the energy is so easy you might not do anything with it!

5. The Opposition (180°)

A tug-of-war. Planets in opposition face each other from across the chart. This aspect often plays out in relationships, where we project one side of the opposition onto someone else. The goal of an opposition is integration and balance.
