Major Arcana vs Minor Arcana Explained
A standard tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into two main categories. Understanding the difference between these two groups is the first step to becoming a skilled reader.
The Major Arcana: Life's Big Lessons
There are 22 Major Arcana cards, often called the "trump cards." They represent significant life events, major archetypes, and spiritual lessons. When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it suggests that the situation has deep importance and might be outside of your immediate control.
These cards follow "The Fool's Journey," a symbolic path from innocence (The Fool) to enlightenment (The World).
The Minor Arcana: Daily Events
The remaining 56 cards are the Minor Arcana. These cards deal with the "day-to-day" aspects of life—your thoughts, feelings, money issues, and work struggles. They are divided into four suits, each corresponding to an element:
- Wands (Fire): Action, passion, creativity, and ambition.
- Cups (Water): Emotions, relationships, intuition, and love.
- Swords (Air): Intellect, communication, conflict, and logic.
- Pentacles (Earth): Money, material security, work, and health.

Within the Minor Arcana, there are 16 Court Cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King). These often represent specific people in your life, or different facets of your own personality. They bridge the gap between "daily life" and "human character."
Putting It Together
In a reading, pay attention to the balance. If you see many Major Arcana cards, you are in a season of "fated" growth. If the spread is mostly Minor Arcana, you have more agency to change the outcome through your immediate choices.
