The Tarot Court Cards: Archetypes of Soul
The Court Cards—the Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings—are often the most confusing part of a tarot reading. They represent the "people" in your life, different stages of maturity, or facets of your own personality waiting to be expressed.
The Maturity Levels
Each level of the court represents a different stage of development in relation to that suit's element:
- Pages (The Student): Young energy, messages, and new beginnings. The Page is just starting to learn the lessons of their suit.
- Knights (The Hero): Action, questing, and sometimes impulsivity. The Knight is putting the suit's energy into motion in the world.
- Queens (The Internal Master): Mastery through internal understanding. The Queen embodies the emotional and intuitive power of her suit.
- Kings (The External Master): Mastery through external structure. The King embodies authority and leadership within his suit.
The Suits as Personalities
Combine the level (Page/King) with the suit to find the specific archetype:
- Court of Wands (Fire): Passionate, creative, and sometimes volatile. The "Visionaries."
- Court of Cups (Water): Emotional, intuitive, and caring. The "Healers."
- Court of Swords (Air): Intellectual, logical, and sharp. The "Strategists."
- Court of Pentacles (Earth): Practical, grounded, and wealthy. The "Builders."

When a Court Card appears, ask yourself: "Is this a person I know, or is this a part of me that I need to embody?" A Page might be a literal message coming your way, while a King might suggest you need to take charge of a situation with more authority.
